Podcasting and vodcasting. Many librarians have heard of it, some may be actively listening and watching them, some libraries have created them, but fewer have actually made their own pod- or videocast and uploaded them to the web.
This thursday I attended the hands-on workshop about podcasting and vodcasting in academic libraries by David Free, at Ticer Summerschool in Tilburg, the Netherlands. David currently works as Public Services Librarian at the Decatur Campus Library of Georgia Perimeter College, where they were possibly the first library ever, to promote services through a podcast.
David gave a clear introduction to what podcasting is (simply said: MP3 + RSS = podcast (Aaron Schmidt at CIL 2007) and how to find and subscribe to them as a user. Since there is a growing audience of internet users that listen to podcasts (PEW/Internet report) - either on their computer or portable devices, it can be rewarding to promote library services and activities through this channel.
